John attended Huntington University (IN) on a soccer scholarship, an upon graduation he moved to North Carolina to work as a wilderness camp counselor for at-risk youth. After three years in the woods, he met his wife, Claire, and became a high school math teacher. He then went on to North Carolina Central University School of Law, where he graduated with honors.
After law school, John clerked at the North Carolina Court of Appeals before deciding to move to Clemmons and start his own firm. Now, he is a partner at Martin and Gifford, PLLC, in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, and focuses his practice on real estate.
He and his wife are active members at the West Campus of Calvary Baptist Church where he serves as an assistant Bible fellowship teacher and provides pro bono legal services. They have four children: Eliott, Carter, Isaiah, and Avenuery. John continues to play recreation league soccer, runs in the occasional 5K, and coaches his kids' various sports teams.
